Utopia
Todd Rundgren's Utopia
1974 Bearsville Records
Utopi Theme
Freak Parade
Freedom Fighters
The Ikon

The first Utopia record is vastly different from what they would become: a fantastic power pop combo. This
one is, one would think, a chance for Todd to cash in on the popularity of prog rock

Nothing like Prog Rock live. Well, I'd prefer GOOD Prog Rock like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson. Utopia as
a Prog Rock band is just laughable. And here's the proof.

Ah, the Power Pop that is Utopia! FINALLY, Todd got his head out of the clouds and got back to making
some good ol' rock 'n' roll.

Tthe first Utopia album I bought, and the first (and only) Utopia tour I saw! What an impression on such a
young mind! Blossom Music Center, on the lawn, Summer 1980, raining like all get out. 10 minutes before
the show, the rain stopped and a rather inebriated young lady next to me stood up, swaying left to right with
a plastic milk jug (gallon) filled with beer started chanting, "It stopped raining for Todd! It stopped raining for
Todd!" Such was my introduction to the adult world of rock 'n' roll! I loved it! Oh, and the album rocks, too!
Utopia's best!

A couple good MTV singles, and some interesting production as well. Something is lacking, though. Maybe
they should have just weeded out the lesser tunes and put out a single albumn (2 sides, not 3) of the better
stuff. Oh, well . . . hindsight, I guess.

A little better, at least heading in the right direction. Again, the production could be better (what's going on,
Todd? You can produce better than this!) but the songs are improving, despite the obvious stabs of stale
wit.

Their last album, and they went out almost on top. Their best effort in years, it's a shame that they decided to
call it quits after this. They could've reclaimed their greatness if they kept going.

Ya like? Check this out!
