The legendary, groundbreaking album from The Who, yet few people outside of the fans know about this
record. Kit Lambert, The Who's manager and producer, suggested that Pete Townshend write a 'mini-
opera' since the album was short of songs by about 10 minutes. So, Townshend wrote several 1-2 minute
songs, strung them together and the Rock Opera was born. Without A Quick One, there would be no
Tommy.

This is my favourite Who album of all time! DEFINITELY a Desert Island Disc! Not only are the songs
absolutely fantastic, you get to hear what Pirate Radio was like back in 1967 London. Americans didn't
really know bad they had it - tons of AM radio stations that played music catered to them. In England, the
BBC regulated what everyone heard and in order to hear new music that wasn't sacntioned by the BBC,
you had to tune into Pirate Radio. Broadcasts that came from just outside England's ocean boundaries
that played all the new and exciting music that teenagers were craving. The Who lovingly and accurately
portrays what those days were like (even more exciting since it was recorded at the height of Pirate Radio).

If ever the word 'masterpiece' were appropo, this is it. Pete Townshend's quintessential rock opera tells of
the perils of worshipping false idols or gods, (including pop stars) and the fanaticism (ergo, gullibility) of the
masses can lead to moral and spiritual emptiness. Released in 1969, it's kind of funny and kind of sad that
things really haven't changed all that much since then.

My attempt at sequencing Townshend's albatross! I think I came pretty close, considering I had nothing to go

recorded around the same time. For the official version, check out Townshend's Lifehouse Chronicles.

I really went overboard with The Who with this album. Even had a homemade version of the jacket on the
cover. (A wonder what you can do with duct tape!) I identified with the central character so much, that I
actually felt Pete Townshend had the inside track on my life. That's how close to home it struck.

A bootleg of the original Quadrophenia tour from 1974. After attempting to perform the album in its entirety

between song explanations of the story), The Who dropped the idea of a full performance and finshed the
tour with selections from the album and past hits.

Ken Russell to direct! Who would star? How about Ann-Margret? She's hot! Keith's friend Oliver Reed
said he'd do anything for Keith! And I've always loved Jack Nicholson, let's get him! Of course, they'll all
sing! You get the picture . . .

After the commercial failure of Quadrophenia and the bastardization of Tommy by director Ken Russell,
Townshend was spent. No inspiration, just major depression and endless bottles of brandy helped to
create this musical malaise. If it was anybody other than Townshend, this would have been a
lousy record. While not particularly uplifting, it is engrossing to watch the decay of the most rebellious
spirit in rock history.

Yes, another movie soundtrack, but this time (as opposed to the Tommy film) the movie was actually very
good. Plus, with this soundtrack we're treated with three (count 'em!) NEW Who songs. Granted, Keith
Moon
had passed on, but having some new Who material was still exciting (even though Kenney Jones
did the drumming). Also, the album contains some great Mod classics as well as a track by The High

Finally released in all of it's glory, I was kind of saddened by this. I mean, the greatest live album ever
released was originally a single album with six songs total. Although it's great to hear The Who perform an
entire concert at the height of ther performing prowess, it kind of takes away from the magic of the original
release. But it does have them performing all of Tommy live, just months after its release.

After 24 years, the unbelievable has happened - The Who has released a new album!!! One can only
wonder what it would have sounded like if John Entwistle were still alive, but . . . any new Who is better than
no Who at all. That said, there are some interesting things and one stumper. First, why, oh why, did Pete
Townshend
sing 'In the Ether' as if he were Tom Waits? It sounds HORRIBLE!!! But he redeems himself
with 'God Speaks of Marty Robbins.' And then there is 'A Man in a Purple Dress,' an acoustic guitar alone
with Roger Daltrey's voice. Something never before done in Whodom, and it works very nicely. Is it a true
Who album? Maybe not, but it has more power than the 1980's Who (which I loved), and they still rock better
than alot of new bands out there today.

Ya like? Check these out!
