This box set celebrates the wonderful
music made in England by the definition
of 'Do It Yourself,' Stiff Records (1976 -
1983)

Stiff brought the world some of the best
bands ever. Elvis Costello, Devo,
Ian Dury, the Damned . . .

Plus for many American acts, Stiff was
the only place that would give them a
chance (Rachel Sweet, Jane Aire &
the Belvederes
, Devo - all from Akron,
OH!)

But, as they say, all good things must
come to an end. It wouldn't be until 1994
or so with the formation of Creation
Records
and Go! Records (both
British, of course) that we'd see
something of this kind of excitement in
the music industry again. And sadly,
that only lasted a few years as well. Disc 3

In 1993, Rhino Records released an impressive collection of tapes and CD's titled D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself).
This collection celebrated the wonderful and influential music (mostly unheard of by the masses) released
on both sides of the Atlantic since 1976. Unfortunately, I don't have all of them - but I do have quite a few.

Ah, the wimpy sounds of Power Pop in its infancy. I don't mean to come down on Power Pop. I love Power Pop, but in the 90's sense (Jellyfish, Owsley, The Merrymakers, Sloan). And in light of what else was going on musically in this time frame (Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Who), this music DID seem wimpy. But don't let
that fool you -- plenty of great tunes here.

In 1976 - 77, Akron, Ohio, was dubbed 'the New Liverpool.' There was an incredible amount of talent coming
from the Rubber Capital of the World, and since I've spent my entire life here, I decided it was time to
commit all those dusty 45's and decomposing tapes to CD. Had to preserve my formative years somehow,
dinnit I! Anyway, this is the first in a hopefully ever-growing collection.

I became enterprising with this. In the early 90's, VH-1 used to show old episodes of Ready, Steady, Go!,
the classic British 60's version of American Bandstand. They would get popular groups of the day to perform
their latest hits, with a bunch of Mod kids dancing about. Great stuff, but I only had it on video. So as I said,
enterprising chap that I am, I dubbed an episode to CD (also dubbed a Rolling Stones edition, and I'm
working on a Beatles edition). Incredible stuff. Though I missed the scene by about two decades and a
continent, I can at least venture back and experience some of that magical London scene!

Every year there are several music festivals in England that celebrate many of the musical styles around. I
can't find anything like this in the Cleveland area, the supposed 'Rock 'n' Roll Capital of the World.' (What a
laugh! Though I lobbied for Cleveland to get the Rock Hall, I'd like to start a lobby now to move it where it's
deserved: San Francisco, London . . . even Cincinatti, Ohio, has more to do with Rock 'n' Roll than
Cleveland does now. But I digress . . . .)
Anyway, this compilation celebrates these British festivals and the groups that played there in 1998.

A prediction from Q Magazine: these are the best of new music in 2002, as far as the British music scene
was concerned. Funnily enough, this was released in June 2002. What about the rest of the year? Anyway,
BritPop was dead and Q started to cover techno-industrial-metal-rap rather extensively, so I stopped
reading it. This was the last compilation (andprobably the last issue) I got. Another great era bites the dust.

Y'know, sometimes Power Pop can rock your socks off (Enuff Z'Nuff) and other times it sounds wimpy as
all get out (The Raspberries). Doesn't mean the 'wimpy' stuff stinks, it's just got a different feel to it. Anyway,
this compilation celebrates the best in Power Pop from 1979 - 1993, including tunes from well-knowns
and unheard-ofs alike.

Do Something -
Alternative

1994 Columbia Records
Mary Jane - Spin Doctors

Tear - Lotion
Got this one at Taco Bell, of all places! In 1994, the Bell was running a promotion to cash in on the latest
"new wave" of music lovingly labelled 'Alternative.' Some great tunes on this CD. Sadly, every group on this
compilation is now defunct. A tragedy, since the music scene did get some fresh blood pumped into it from
1994 - 1997. A truly golden era that just didn't last. Like most golden eras I guess.

Picked this one up in London in 1996. Y'see, the late 90's American Ska movement was laughable -- the
same way any Punk movement after 1977 is laughable. It's been done! Come up with something new,
bands of today! Of the best purveyors of the original Ska scene, only The Specials and Madness were
known to the majority of Americans, thanks solely to MTV (aah, the good ol' days!). This compilation shows
that these two groups were not the only ones around. The Selecter, Judge Dread, Bad Manners . . . thank
God I found this collection!

In 1997 I saw Echo & the Bunnymen with Longpigs (!) in Cleveland, Ohio. Very excited to see the Bunnymen
back together. Anyway, reps from Geffen Records were in the audience passing out goodies, including
this sampler. Nevermind some of the tracks were more than 10 years old, it was very cool to get something
free at a concert!

Kind of misleading, this one. Mojo Magazine put out a Mod issue that was absolutely brilliant, and they
included a free CD to compliment the issue. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I always thought
the original Mod movement lasted from 1964 - 1966 . . . why there's tracks from 1968, 1969 I don't know.
Either way, though, this is a very good compilation with a distinctly British feel.

A cheapy K-Mart compilation that is actually quite good. Lots of classic tracks - some available elsewhere,
but the price was right.

In Britain around 1979 - 1980, the Mod revival hit with full force. Punk was dead, The Who's Quadrophenia
film opened with rave reviews . . . even Pete Townshend paid homage to mods in his 1980 video for
'Rough Boys' from his Empty Glass album. This compilation spotlights some of the several mod bands
that were happening during that revival. Quite interesting and exciting, indeed.

It's about time! Honouring the ultimate power pop outfit with a tribute CD. The only drawback is that outside
of Enuff Z'Nuff and Glenn Burtnick, nobody has ever heard of these mediocre, wannabe Pop Metal acts.
A wonderful idea lackadaisically approached. And it shows.

Finally! It always irks me that people espouse the genius of John Lennon while ignoring the genius of Paul
McCartney
. Yes, Lennon was a brilliant songwriter, but take a close look at The Beatles' history. You'll see
that after 1966 (the year Lennon wanted to quit the group), Paul became the de facto leader. And every
artistic bent the group had until their breakup (Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, psychedelia, roots rock) all came
from Paul. This collection is a tribute to his continued genius after the Beatles as a solo artist and as the
frontman for Wings.
