Orbit is a mainstay of the Akron music scene going back to the day when Devo, Tin Huey, The Waitresses,
and the like were trying to make it in the late 70s - early 80s. But this is NOT the band that is featured on the
soundtrack of That Thing You Do!

Another in the onslaught of British heavy metal / hard rock bands in the early 80s, along with Iron Maiden

One of the original bands from the British Invasion of the 60s, The Searchers had a string of hits that many

In the early 80s, Ska was taking Britain by storm. Madness, The Specials, and The Selecter were just
some of the great bands of the 2 Tone movement. Sadly, as with all great fads, Ska didn't last too long; the
so-called resurgence in the early 90s was not Ska - just a poor imitation.

What a find! This incredible trio turned out some of the best Power Pop you've never heard! Guitarist
Owsley went on to a promising solo career in the late 90s, only to stall amid a market glutted with talentless
pretty faces churning out awful teen pop. Anyway, this album is one of the bright spots of the early 90s
Power Pop scene.

What Have We Got
In England in the late 70s, the punk movement was still going strong despite the demise of The Sex Pistols.
The Clash was going strong, The Police were just starting, and a myriad of bands mostly unknown to U.S.
music fans were making waves. Sham 69 was one of them with their punk attitudes and overtly political
sensibilities. In the early 21st century this music does sound a bit dated, but is does evoke the feelings of
the times very well.

The White Tent the Raft
Red High Heels
Goodbye
Ingrid and the Footman
Lena is a White Table
The Walking (and Constantly)
The Lobby
The Bird in the Gravel
Another one difficult to describe. Kind of like tone poems set to a beat. Poetry you can dance to! At times,
very strange and at others, very emotionally compelling. From joy to sadness, Siberry covers it all.

The Silence
The Silence

If This Night Should Ever End
Another great local band in the 80s (Akron - Kent -Cleveland, Ohio) that the venerable Herb Jackson
signed. Though many local bands at the time stayed away from Jackson like he had the plague, I still thank
him for recording some great acts of the time (The Attitude, Terrible Parade).

Skin Machine
Another remnant of the great Akron band, Joy Circuit, Skin Machine is the latest project from Mike
Render
, JC's original guitarist and main songwriter. Enlisting the help of Stephen Taylor for vocals (also
from Joy Circuit and Time No Reason), SM is a goth-head's dream. Moody, powerful, yet carries a tune -
definitely NOT a poseur's band.

Fantastic band out of Sweden or someplace like that. Incredible hooks, strong vocals, great songs . . . it's

thing!

Southside Johnny was kinda big around here (Northeast Ohio) in the early 80s, along the lines of Michael

Wrong Side of the Bed
Another local band from Akron, Ohio circa early 90's. The brainchild of Tim Prentice, Standing Waves
was formed after the demise of probably one of the greatest Akron bands ever (and bafflingly never signed
to a major label), Joy Circuit. In that tradition, this is a collection of tuneful synthseizer-oriented songs, but in
a 90's style. For other Joy Circuit related material, click on any of these:

The second solo album from the frontman of KISS, and it only took him 28 years to do it! At times he tries to sound like Creed (what?!?) but overall, it's a harmless little album with some decent tunes. If KISS is really gone, at least we know Paul will carry on the torch.

A PERFECT example of why England will always dominate when it comes to original rock music. Virtually
unknown in America, the Roses were all the rage in the UK, and this disc explains why. The Manchester
combo, along with Happy Mondays, put Manchester, England back on the musical map as a powerhouse
of great music. If you ever get the chance to purchase this CD, do NOT hesitate.

FINALLY, Joe Strummer put out a new album! Interesting stuff, too. Not unlike the Clash but not reminiscent of them, either. Sounds strange, I know, but in the musical landscape of 1999, this was a breath of unexpected fresh air.

One of the most eagerly awaited albums in Power Pop history is that of Andy Sturmer's debut.
Unfortunately, it's been a decade since the demise of one of the greatest bands ever (Jellyfish), Sturmer still
hasn't released anything! Sure, he played drums on The Merrymakers' Bubblegun CD, but he hasn't done
anything on his own. Though there is this sparse collection of demos he did. Whoopee . . .

At the height of The Jam's success, Paul Weller got bored and broke up the band. Then he turned around
and formed The Style Council and released a bunch of jazzy, British pop-soul records that were very
successful. Then at the height of the Style Council, he broke them up, too and embarked on a solo career
that is going strong to this day. Give the people what they want, eh?

WHAT A DISCOVERY!!! Since Jellyfish ended, I've been on the lookout for the Next Big Thing. Outside of
Sloan, Sugarbomb is it. A great Power Pop band from Texas (!), this was their major label debut. Yet
again, the ugly monster of corporate teen pop, American Idol crap overshadowed another talented band.
Don't know where they are know, but I sure hope I found out soon.

A great power pop record that was dismissed by Cheap Trick, and at one point there was even a lawsuit
against the other guys in the band and the record label. Apparently, Tom Petersson (CT, bass) agreed to
help out and record a couple songs for this record. Well, the label then promoted the CD on the strength of
the connection to Petersson and Cheap Trick (that's why I bought it, to be honest). Seems that Petersson
and CT didn't like that, so they pursued legal action. Whether it got to the courts is beyond me.
